Most of us are acquainted with the tongue-twister: Peter Piper Picked a peck of pickled peppers…Ever wonder what the real story is?  Author Bill Willingham and illustrator Steve Leialoha have brought this tongue torturer to life.

Peter’s the younger son of the Piper family, traveling musicians. He’s the more skilled of the two brothers and is given his father’s magical flute, Frost, over his elder sibling Max.  This starts a feud between the two that culminates in modern times centuries later and also explains the true story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin Town.

The beautifully told story includes a cast of dozens of our fairy tale favorites, including Bo Peep, Beauty and the Beast, and even the Wolf. The illustrations are a wonderful companion to the tale.  This is my first exposure to the “Fables” series and will not be my last.  I am delighted with how well all the fairy tale characters and creatures are interwoven into a complex modern world.
