I Can See You

Shadowland: ā€œSometimes you want to go where no one knows your nameā€

Eve Wilson is a graduate student studying psychology who also tends bar at Sal’s, a favorite hangout for police officers. She is a survivor of a life threatening attack that has left her not only physically scarred but also emotionally fragile.

Shadowland, the subject of Eve’s thesis, is a computer based game in which, primarily women, lacking confidence in real life situations, can participate in the game and ā€œpracticeā€ at whatever life experience is of interest. In Shadowland, the women can be whatever they want: dancer, card player, whatever fantasy strikes them. But the women in the study are dying, more specifically committing suicide…or are they ?

To become a test subject, a comprehensive application is required. The killer knows all about his victims, including what frightens them the most. It’s a double blind study – who could possibly know enough about these women to cause them harm ?

Noel Webster, homicide detective, is himself a damaged individual but is one of the few men Eve trusts. Noel suspects that Eve is on the ā€œsuicide ā€œ list and he becomes her self- appointed protector. Naturally, a relationship ensues.

With a whole host of suspects and numerous other characters, I Can See You is a page turner that will keep the reader up at night in order to find out who is responsible for the death of these women. Clues dropped along the way often turn out to be empty and the drama builds!

For this reader who does not, nor ever has, played computer games, it is a stretch to imagine the intricacies of online games but the excitement of the plot and the author’s ability to cast doubt on all the characters allowed me to overlook virtual vs. reality.

Both thumbs up for this book !
