Thefts of 300 million dollars worth of paintings from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Art Museum in 1990 literally left empty frames in the galleries and puzzled criminologists and mystery lovers for years. Author and attorney David Hosp posits a theory about this case in “Among Thieves” that’s both interesting and plausible.
When some of Boston’s most notorious Irish criminals start turning up murdered, the cops know there’s something afoot. Defense attorney Finn gets involved when an acquaintance calls him asking for help. Devon, a petty thief, just got arrested for a big score and he’s needing help getting out. Finn wouldn’t have taken the case except Devon’s got a kid, a fourteen-year-old daughter, who has no one else to take care of her and neither man wants the girl ending up in the system.
“Among Thieves” is a well-written mystery told through multiple points of view from all sides of the story, including criminal, victim, and law enforcement. The tale is fast-paced enough that you’ll want to finish once you pick up the story. Best of all, you get a glimpse into an art theft that’s puzzled many for over twenty years.
