Robert B. Parker

It’s always hard to lose an author.  It’s devastating to lose one like Robert B. Parker who passed away yesterday at the age of 77.  He gave us so much—mysteries, westerns, young adult and middle grade mysteries, historical suspense—and, when we weren’t reading, we could watch his books adapted to the small screen.  The Spenser: For Hire series was a big hit and his recent TV movies featuring Jesse Stone have been fun.

Before entering the crime fiction world, Parker wrote his PhD dissertation on detective fiction and taught college English until his writing career became successful with his iconic Spenser becoming his signature character.  Obviously, he was a man steeped in his genre and it has been reported that he died at his desk.  I hope he had just finished his latest adventure with Spenser or Jesse Stone or Sunny Randall.

Parker’s publisher reports that at least two more books  are expected to be released this year so we at least have a little to look forward to but he will be sorely missed by everyone who has ever loved a good story.
