Vacation Time Part Deux

Vacation is almost over, just today and tomorrow left–sob!  I broke my pinky toe Sunday, when a grocery cart suddenly stopped and I didn’t,  but nothing really dreadful has happened (knock on wood) so this can be called another successful trip to the beach.  There’s something about the Outer Banks that soothes the soul every time we come down here so we always look forward to the annual June trek.

It’s unusually hot this June, 5 degrees or so higher than normal, and the ocean waves are pretty much nonexistent.  I’m not sure what to think about that but the surfers are probably most unhappy.  Not that the Outer Banks are where you’d ever find great surfing waves but they’ll go wherever they can find the least little bit of lift so this week must be a real disappointment for them.

I don’t do steps or sand very well—bum knees and hip—and the toe doesn’t help, but I have managed to get up to the deck on top of the dunes in the evening when it’s a tad cooler.  I could sit up there for hours if I could just figure a way to take all the amenities with me ;)   Failing that, we’ve all spent a lot of time on the deck outside our apartment with its sliver view of the ocean and fabulous ocean breezes (albeit a bit toastier than usual).

As for books, I’ve started A Killer Plot by Ellery Adams and, at night on the iPod Touch, I’m listening to Under the Dome by Stephen King.  I started that one during the trip to Charlotte and St. Augustine three weeks ago but kept falling asleep and having to rewind way too much, a real annoyance.  Then, Bonnie, a member of one of my book clubs, showed me how to use the sleep timer function on the Touch.  Thank you, Bonnie!  Now I only have to rewind a little bit, much better.

For right now, though, I have to go out there in the heat and enjoy this wonderful place while there’s still time.   Y’all come on down!
