June, I am inspired by your journey. Thank you for sharing it with us. I have always had the seed of the writing dream, but I didn't start taking myself more seriously until after I retired from a 31-year teaching career. Some of my articles and book reviews have been published and I hope to get my first book out there soon. When I am tempted to throw it all in, my good friend Magda reminds me of Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule. Apparently, it takes that long to develop proficiency in any field. So, I take heart and continue writing.

June, I don't have the discipline to be a writer and never will but I do so admire your tenacity and your unwillingness to just let the dream go. Thanks for being here today ;)

What a wonderful post. Thank you for sharing so much of your story (I suspect there's even more--and all equally fascinating). You clearly have a triumphant spirit. I'm glad Deadly Ink saw you as a winner.

My own advice when asked is Never give up--unless you can. There are far easier ways to make a living. Many writers never make a living.

But if you can't *not* write then keep trying forever. You never know when the next day--the next second--will be the one that fulfills your dream.

C.K., that's one of the great things about being a writer. Our words come through our fingertips, so we don't have to be a big talker.

Most useful post! I love reading mysteries, but writing them are SO HARD for me. This method, and your clear illustration of it, will be extremely helpful, and will keep me from feeling so lost as I wander through my own rough drafts. :)

Writers have to write, I think, even though they may never get published. It's part of our makeup, and there's no way to change it.

I remember a guy once came up to me and said he wanted to be a writer and asked how to go about it. He was in his mid-twenties. I asked him what had he written so far. He said nothing. He was no writer. I doubt if he ever would be. You have to have the "seed" from the beginning. You have to nurture it, and that means writing something, usually a lot of things, and continue to work on your project and then start another one until something clicks. A writer writes like a fish swims. It's just the way we are. Disappointed when something doesn't get published, start something new. Never give up. When a shark stops swimming, it dies.

Writing is such a compulsion, I couldn't quit if I wanted to. I'm not much of a talker--just ask the folks in my crit group, sharp and to the point--so all those stored up words have to come out somehow. Perhaps if I'd never been published, my dream would've died. Perhaps. Perhaps not.
